Sweet Girl

I was born on Father's Day.  It has been said that I was a "daddy's girl" from the start.  The story goes that he picked my name.  Apparently, my mother preferred Meredith.  Not that there's anything wrong with the name Meredith, but I have always felt like Erin suited me.

My dad calls me "Sweet Girl".  Always has, and still does.  My dad likes to spend time to pick out just the right greeting card for special occasions.  (I picked up this trait from him.)  On the envelope and/or inside, he address many of them to me as "Sweet Girl".  I used an envelope from a recent card as inspiration for my next permanent piece of body art.

I met with Melanie (ig: melaniemilnetattoos) and talked about what I had in mind.  I like sweet things, and the color pink, and strawberries, and cupcakes, and the fact that my dad calls me "Sweet Girl".  She used his handwriting to create this tattoo around it.

I sat for about an hour.  We chatted.  We listened to Silverchair.

Then, this masterpiece was unveiled.
It's a little red & irritated ~ this is fresh off the press
I know tattoos aren't for everyone, and I have no problem with someone who never wants a tattoo.  But, they are for me.  In fact, my mother is messaging me as I type this telling me "no more tattoos."  I love them.  I love the stories behind them.  I love the way that people express themselves through their body art.

Speaking of my mother, Melanie and I have one planned to honor my mother coming up in December.  Whether my mom likes it, or not.

Do you have any tattoos that honor a family member?

  1. This is amazing... I love that it actually incorporates your dad's handwriting!

I love the name Meredith. I would definitely have used it for a child if it I didn't live in a German speaking country (I shudder to think what the Germans will do to a lovely name! I can just hear them now... "Mare-uh-deeeeeet").

  2. Silverchair! I love that I just learned they are Australian!

The colors in your tattoo are beautiful, and the story behind the tattoo is as well. I adore stories behind tattoos.

  3. Aww it is so nice!!! I am not a tattoo person (on my own body at least) because I'm too indecisive but I love ones that have a great story and are deeply meaningful. Can't wait to see what the one in December looks like!!

  5. I also like stories behind tattoos.

My brother has a little E for my grandfather incorporated into another tattoo on his arm.

  6. I love tattoos with stories. All three of mine have pretty special meaning (as they should), but they're not in honor of a family member or anyone in particular.

  7. I have one tattoo and K has one, but neither honor a family member.

I'd like to get a simple elephant someday, but now isn't the time. Half of my family have no idea about my tattoo so I'm going to wait a few years for the next one :)

  8. I am so in love with that. I really like that she used his handwriting in it. So cool. Not only do I have my newest addition but I have another one of a lil girl sitting in the moon & she's blowing star-shaped bubbles & they are in the birthstone colors of my maternal grandparents, my mom & my siblings. :)

i have a several on my back representing my family; a big one in the middle of my back that I got when my father died and i was pregnant with kayla...it's a cherry blossom tree with a single flower (kayla) and a red sparrow on the same branch (sparrow = my dad - he loved birds).

  10. I love that the tattoo has his hand writing in it and you have such an awesome story/representation behind it! I am a big fan of tattoos and I love to hear the stories of how they came to be. I only have one now and I was planning on getting my second this past summer butttt pregnancy stopped that. I hope to get it next year instead.

  14. I LOVE it! As someone who was on the fence about tattoos for myself, (but can totally appreciate them on other people/think people should do whatever they want, even if that means tattooing 666 on their forehead) deciding to get a tattoo in honor of my dad after he passed away was the easiest decision ever. And my mom, who has been a lifelong tattoo-hater even decided she needed one. So I love that you are honoring your dad while he's still here. <3

  15. This made me tear up! That's a beautiful story and such a pretty tattoo to go with it. Unfortunately my entire family hates tattoos (especially my husband) and I personally believe I'm too fickle for ink, so no tributes are in my immediate future. Who knows, though... I'd love to get something in my Dad's handwriting.

  18. No, I only have one tattoo and it is a celestial sunburst thing that I just HAD to have when I was 25 years old and was kinda into celestial stuff back then. I call it my souvenir of my quarter life crisis. Given that I'm not into celestial stuff anymore and it has faded considerably, I am considering having it redone/repurposed into something new, something that means something to me now. I figure this one will be to commemorate my mid-life crisis. LOL!
