I wear what I want to wear

I am learning to embrace myself, all of me.  As I get older and years have snuck up on me that I once viewed as "old", I realize that I embrace my years, my experiences, the lessons I've learned, the person that I am, and the person that I will become (because I always want to learn and grow more.)  No one is guaranteed to make it to 43 years old.  So, I appreciate where I am in life.

One thing about myself that I've always embraced is this...I wear what I want.  I don't say that to mean that I don't care whatsoever what people think.  I do.  A little.  But, for the most part, I wear what makes me happy and comfortable.  Not to the standards of what others think I should wear.  Especially those stupid lists that you see in many female magazines.

Which brings me to this link that I saw shared on facebook:  24 Things Women Over 30 Should Wear
Do yourself a favor; please, please click on that link.  I know it's only Tuesday, but it made my whole week.

Things I still wear because I want to, and I could care less if I'm "supposed" to (or not) since I'm "over 30":

Cons & Vans (yes, these have sequins on them):

Animal print (taken today!):

Cute & silly painted nails:

Docs (I have pink, black, and these):

Graphic tees:

Pink hair:

Big, fake flowers in my hair:

 Pigtails:

Double whammy...concert tees & purple glitter eyeliner:

What do you wear that breaks the rules?

  1. Ha I love this! I break many of these stupid rules on a regular basis. I have band tees, glittery eyeshadow, and I don't even own a pair of socks that matches so tough. Also pigtails are a genuinely useful hair style especially if you have short hair plus I think they look cute so no I will never give up my pigtails. You do you, individuality is what makes us interesting.

  2. Those Doc boots are AMAZING!!

I'm sure I'm doing everything wrong... although I don't own any band tees any more. My sister ruined my last one. Practically all my dresses are short though.
You look much younger than your age! Purely based on these photos I would have guessed you to be around 35 (even though I already knew different).

  3. My style hasn't really changed from 20-30. I still wear shorts whenever I want (even when others are wearing jeans) and I wear skirts/dresses a lot. People have this thing about pants: they like to wear them. I hate to wear them.

  4. Papa Roach!!! I have a couple CDs of theirs from 10 years ago and I re-listened to them recently to see if I still like it. Tchah! Never gets old. I don't even know what "docs" are (the brand?) but those are super cute, and overall I love your style. I'm not quite to 30 yet (next year!), but I've only started collecting graphic tees in the last year or two, so I'm apparently going backwards. And after seeing your sequin shoes, omg I want some!

  5. I don't wear certain things because I don't like how I look in them, not because of asinine rules that some asshole came up with. I wear what makes me feel good and happy. I'm pretty boring in the clothes department but I will go to town with makeup and nail polish. My hair is too dark for fun colors but I assure you, if it were not, I'd be rocking the blue or pink. If you don't like what you see, look away. I'm not here to please anybody but me.

The rule women are supposed to live by are ridiculous. Live and let live. You do your thing, I'll do mine.

  6. I love this so much. <3 I have recently begun thinking about getting a tattoo that says "Gypsy" in honor of Stevie Nicks, my style, and a favorite photograph I have of my mom when she was 15 and prancing around her yard dressed as a gypsy (with a stuffed bra *lol*). I love that in our 40s, we seem to finally be able to feel comfortable enough in our skin to wear what we want without apologizing for it. Note: I need those glittery sneakers!!!

  9. I don't really follow any rules of dressing except 1) I will never ever wear something just because it's trendy...especially if it's not good for my body type! 2) I always dress appropriately for work.

  10. When I was younger, I definitely cared about what was the "in" thing to wear. Probably because I was young and a unicorn (in that I was a one of just a few minorities where I lived and being fully made-up and immaculately dressed is what I did to go to the grocery store), but now that I'm older, I do dress more for me. I still want to look good, but I'm not going to be in pain either (5 inch heels, look great but ouch!) I love your pink hair and I have at least 3 shirts and jackets that are animal print too! It's one of the best things about getting older, you get more comfortable in your own skin.

  11. That link is awesome! I just bought my first pair of Converse last year at 31, so totally breaking the "rules" there! And graphic tees, I love them, I will never stop wearing them. LOVE your purple glitter eyeliner!

  12. Ha, I love this! And I totally agree. Who makes up these rules anyway?! I'm a huge fan of wearing concert tees.

  13. PREACH! Saw that link not too long ago and I loved it too. You rock whatever you want to, and you wear it well, lady! (Not that you need me to tell you that to keep on rocking it ;))

  14. Those women in that linked article are so freakin' stylish! I hope to have their flair and confidence when I'm 30+ !!

It drive my husband absolutely nuts, but I wear sweatshirts all the time. He calls me a soccer mom but I take it as a term of endearment. I also wear Harry Potter stuff, my ripped up slip-on checkered Vans, baseball hats, cowboy boots, and anything else I want.

  15. I love that list. Those ladies look wonderful! I dream of one day being that stylish. Also, your pink hair is awesome and I have intentions of possibly going some unnatural color once I get out of the military next year. Six years is a long time if someone telling you what colors your hair can be!

  16. I love it, and I love that you wear what makes you happy and don't listen to what others say. I love a good graphic tee myself, and I think that I would be very depressed if I didn't wear fun nail polish colors!

  17. That article is everything!!! I totally wear whatever I want too. I don't care if something isn't "in style" or whatever. I wear what I am comfortable in. I don't believe in having to give up something you love just because you are a certain age.

  18. Girl, you rock the Hell out of all that stuff & you keep on wearing it! You are "totes adorbs". I'm 35 & I wear concert tees, pigtails from time to time...I don't have the colored hair as my work will not allow it but if I could, I totally would!

  19. Yay! And that link made me so happy! I really hope the girl who wrote the post that (I assume) inspired it gets early genetic hair loss and skin spots.

  20. I loved that link! :-)

I like fashionable things, but I honestly mostly just dress for comfort. I'm a jeans and t-shirt (or hoodie/sweater, depending on the weather) kind of girl. I usually buy a couple of trendier items from time to time, and I'll admit that I'm a huge sucker for expensive designer purses. I can't afford that stuff all the time, but I'll splurge once in a while.

All that being said, I totally dress like a teenager. I had to laugh that you posted this today because I literally looked down at my outfit earlier and thought, "I look like I'm in high school." (If you're curious, I'm wearing an Alexisonfire band t-shirt and dark skinny jeans.) I can wear stuff like that to work, so obviously I take advantage and wear it all the time.

I have probably between 30-40 band/concert t-shirts and I wear them all the time. I also like cute/funny graphic tees. And I have a pair of glittery flats. Haha.

  23. hahaha that link was the best! i hate lists like that, not hers, but the one that sparked hers... like who tell you to own this or that. i am the opposite of you i think, i have never liked converse (big feet, they make me look like ronald mcdonald!)... but that's all i can really think of that we're opposite haha. i don't think i stick with any rules, i wear whatever i feel comfortable in. sometimes that is graphic tees, sometimes it is leggings as pants (with a top long enough to cover my booty lol). i can think of a couple rules i break: pear shaped women shouldn't wear tight bottoms, like leggings or skinny jeans, they should go for bootcut or flares. i HATE bootcut and flares! i much prefer my skinny jeans. it's weird. i don't like my bottom half, but i wear 'tight' bottoms and loose tops. its what i am comfortable in, i don't give a shit.
also stripes, as we talked about haha cause they are the shit.
