I show you my books, you show me yours vol.6

I've said it before, I'll say it again: this is my favorite blog link-up (hosted by Jana & Steph).  Hooray books!  For the record: when this link-up goes live, it is 3:00pm in the future (my time in Sydney).  That's why I link-up right away, start reading and commenting, my goodreads goes bezerk.  I'm just that excited AND it coordinates with my time zone.

http://www.lifeaccordingtosteph.com/2015/07/show-us-your-books-what-i-read-in-june.html

I read a lot this month, so if you want to skim, here are my recommendations (but there's a lot of those too, so you really should read why I recommend them to decide for yourself.  #sorrynotsorry):  Between Shades of Gray, Angela's Ashes, Everything I Never Told You, The Girl on the Train, Shotgun Lovesongs, Moon over Manifest, Galveston.

1. Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys - I love a historical fiction book that actually expands my knowledge.  This book did just that.  While reading, I found myself googling things about Lithuania, the Balkans, and Stalin.  This book is heart-wrenching, even horrific at times with tales of brutality, starvation, and disease...but it is wonderful and beautiful, and I highly recommend it (if you enjoy historical fiction).  5/5
This book was included in a couple of book challenges I'm in (The Official 2015 TBR Pile Challenge and Semi-Charmed Kind of Life Summer Book Challenge 2015).

2.  Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt -   I'm not sure if it was a good idea or a terrible idea to read these two books in a row.  This one, a memoir, so in a way, it was even more awful in its brutality because the author actually experienced the horrors that he describes.  The imagery is so strong and truthful, that I could feel the anguish of Frank and his experiences in extreme poverty, his grief, his hunger, his confusion, and his Catholic guilt. 5/5
This book was included in a couple of book challenges I'm in (The Official 2015 TBR Pile Challenge and Semi-Charmed Kind of Life Summer Book Challenge 2015).

3. Darkside by Belinda Bauer - My goodness, I don't know how to rate this book. The majority of time it was somewhat slow and boring. But, by the end, I was stuck to the pages wanting to know, needing to know what in the hell was going to happen, "whodunit", and how it was all going to end. I was riveted the last 50 pages or so. But, is it worth reading the previous 250+ to get to the good stuff? 2.5/5
This book was included in Semi-Charmed Kind of Life Summer Book Challenge 2015.

4. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart - I didn't love it. I feel like I'm supposed to love it, but I didn't. It was a 2014 Goodreads Best Book. It wouldn't have received my vote.  I read it in a day and a half; obviously, it kept my attention.  I just didn't think it was great. 2.5/5
This book was included in Semi-Charmed Kind of Life Summer Book Challenge 2015.

5.  The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins - Well, I had to read this, didn't I?  Every other blogger has read it or plans to read it, and my cousin recommended it to me as well.  I am often skeptical when a book receives so much attention and praise. But, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I enjoyed each severely flawed character. I enjoyed the pace. I enjoyed the ending. For me, this book deserves the attention it is getting. 4.5/5
I read this as part of the Literary Ladies book challenge.

6. The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion - At times, I was bored; other times, I was entertained. Pretty sure I didn't need a sequel to the much more loved The Rosie Project.  2.5/5
Read for Literary Ladies and Aussie Author Challenge.

7. Shotgun Lovesongs by Nikolas Butler - I really liked this book.  I don't think I ever fell in love with it, but I really, really liked it.  I enjoyed the Wisconsin small town becoming its own character thoroughout the book.  For me, some of the characters felt less developed than others.  Or maybe I just connected to some more than others.  I especially liked Beth.  I don't want to tell you her story, so I won't tell you the specific reasons why I liked her.  Let's just say, her predicament and her experience seemed relatable and authentic.  4/5
Read for Literary Ladies Book Challenge.

8.  Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool - Winner of the 2011 Newberry Medal for Children's Literature, Moon Over Manifest is a delightful book. Filled with mystery, adventure, and colorful characters, the story bounces between 1918 and 1936 as a little girl discovers her identity. 4/5 Read for Book Challenge by Erin (that's me!)
9.  Galveston by Nic Pizzolatto - The author of this book is the creator of the television show, True Detective. Let's just say that he does not write happy, light-hearted stories. The imagery is dark, heavy, and thick much like the humidity in those parts. The descriptions of sub-cultures in Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas are so real and so true.  Knowing that part of the country well, it felt like I know somebody who knows someone that is related to one of these characters.  It is not a quick-paced thriller.  It's slow and steady, then bam! a murder...slow and steady, then whoa! a secret revealed.  4/5 Read for Book Challenge by Erin , and I can count it towards a one-word title for Literary Ladies Book Challenge.

10.  Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - Part of me wanted to devour this book and not put it down; the other part wanted to read it in small increments so I could absorb it and savor it.  The story is told from the perspectives of different characters, from present to past...yet, it flows.  It's not choppy.  It doesn't break these times or perspectives into different chapters like so many other books do.  It just flows really, really well.  It is heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and I felt this in the very depths of me. It is a beautiful, disastrous, powerful book, and I recommend it. 5/5    Read for Book Challenge by Erin
11.  The Dead Women of Juárez by Sam Hawken - The first third of the book, the pace was pretty slow, but the story showed promise.  There is a very real problem in Juárez, Mexico with females being brutally murdered or going missing never to be heard of again. Most of these cases remain unsolved. This fictional book does center on characters impacted by these cases, but it felt vague, hollow, and almost like the author lost his direction, so he changed central characters in the middle of the story.  2/5   Read for Book Challenge by Erin

Challenges Update (really for my own personal bookkeeping):
Semi-Charmed Summer Book Challenge = 10/12; finishes August 31st; I have the two remaining books at home...I just need to read them.
Literary Ladies Book Challenge = 4/10; finishes September 21st; Two of the books remaining, I have checked out from the library, the other four I own, so I should finish this.
Book Challenge by Erin = 4/10; finishes October 31st; Juggling with the two challenges above, but I will definitely finish.  After all, I host it...I'm gonna finish it.
Aussie Author Challenge = 8/12; finishes December 31st
The Official 2015 TBR Pile Challenge = 6/12; finishes December 31st

Next up:  Summertime by Vanessa Lafaye, Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides...I'm so inconsistent how much I read per month.  If I get through those, you better believe I have more on standby.

Sunday's Seven Snapshots vol.29

Astro watched the Women's World Cup with me. He wasn't as excited about the match as I was.

The colors of the sky on my morning train commute can be one of the most beautiful parts of the day.

If you follow my instagram, you've heard me say this before. I don't do winter.

This building reminds me of an apartment block that should be in Barcelona. Or Miami. I have no idea why. I know nothing about architecture.

An old department store on Castlereagh Street. Looks like it was a store for early goth girls, or steampunks, or ladies of the night.

Putting a little more caramel in my hair

New hair is always such a great feeling, and my colorist is the bombdiggity.

Friday Favorites Five vol.10

Hiya!  It's Friday.  I got my hair done, and it's all nice and fresh and silky feeling.  That's a good enough reason to be happy this Friday.

Here's five more reasons to be happy:

Favorite example of spreading the love amongst teammates:  Carli Lloyd explains why she needed to give Abby Wambach the captain's armband

Via Nike
Favorite reason #99,999 that J.J. Watt is the man!: NFL reacts to J.J. Watt being named #1 in #NFLTop100

Favorite meme my guy shared with me this week:

Favorite recipe that I made this week that I got from a blogger: from Bailie
http://www.bailiehemborg.com/2015/06/meals-of-the-week-tomato-artichoke-heart-and-chicken-bake/

Favorite encounter with a customer this week:  I showed a few pairs of diamond stud earrings to a woman on Tuesday.  She told me that she'd be in a relationship for 13 years but had never purchased her partner jewellery.  She said she'd be back Thursday.  In retail, when someone says they'll come back...well...that doesn't always happen.  But, she showed, and she purchased some diamond studs.  She was so grateful for my help, the fact that I wasn't judgmental that she was purchasing a special gift for her lesbian partner, that not only was I not judgmental, but I was supportive (her words as she thanked me), that she gave me a big ol' hug.  Her sincere gratitude warmed my heart.

I link up with the lovely Amanda on Fridays.  You should too.

Don't mean to get all bitchy up in here, but.........

I try not to be negative on my blog.  I try to keep the focus, the posts, the highlights all positive.

But.....

I found myself venting this week about a few "bloggy" topics.  I want to share and vent here too.  If you want to avoid my mini-tantrums, feel free to stop reading now.

Blogging Pet Peeves:

Not replying to my comments:  Most people are busy.  If you find time to blog; find time to show appreciation to those who enjoy your blog.  If I've taken the time to read your blog and comment, then a reply would be nice.  It doesn't need to happen all the time.  It really doesn't.  But, if I read and comment on your blog more than five times, and I've received no response from you ever...this is what I'll do:
  • I'll check to make sure I'm not a no-reply blogger (I know I'm not); I have no-reply bloggers comment on my stuff, and I feel TERRIBLE if I can't respond to them.  Sometimes, I'll go to their blog and try to find their email, just so I can respond, so they don't think I'm rude or don't appreciate them.
  • I'll check to see if I missed an emailed response in my trash files (or gmails "Social" or "Promotional" files).
  • I'll re-visit your blog to see if I missed something that you responded to directly on your blog.
  • I'll check to see how many comments you received; There are several bloggers who receive 50+ comments, but still find the time to respond to me, but I get it...if you've received 150 comments, you may not have time for little ol' me.
  • If there seems to be no good reason that you haven't replied to me, I'll question if I want to continue reading your blog.
Okay, so I don't do those things every time.  Obviously.  But, I have done everything listed.  I try to give the blogger the benefit of my doubts that there is a reason that I'm not hearing back from them.

This is especially bad if I read/follow your blog, follow your instagram and/or twitter, if I've liked, commented, or retweeted your tweets/pics.  If I am supporting you like that, I think you've got some great content.  But, if I feel you aren't really appreciating me...it's difficult to keep that support going.

So, like, talk to me, okay?

Participation in link-ups or blog hops, but not showing love to the others that are linking-up:  Everyone has their reasons for participating in a link-up.  Mostly, you're sharing yourself, your thoughts, and/or common interests.  Plus, you're trying to gain some exposure.  Link-ups are great for this.  So, support and show love for the other link-up participants.  Of course, not everyone is going to have the time to do it every time (look at the other linkers), but if you participate regularly in a link-up, then I think it is absolutely rude not to support the others.  By support, I mean: go read what they linked, comment if you are inspired to do so, even take a look at other blog posts or their "about me" if you really, really like what you see.  It's kinda like breaking the golden rule.  Treat others the way you want to be treated.  Well, if you want others to read and interact with your blog, then you should read and interact with theirs.

Amanda at Meet @ the Barre hosts a super popular Friday Favorites link-up.  As I type this, there are 96 links on one of her FF posts.  That's a lot of links. Again, it takes time...and you're not going to have enough time to read every single link for every single link-up that you participate in (that is, if your participate frequently).  I try to tell myself to at least read 5 other links.  Five.  That's not too much to ask is it?  And, if I am having a crazy busy week, well...I forgive myself and just make sure I read 5 next time.

I'm not encouraging you to write a bunch of comments filled with insincere crap.  But if you're picking up somethin' that I'm laying down, then let me know.

(This has nothing to do with this post except it's probably breaking a blogger rule for using it when it doesn't pertain to the post...but I was searching for another usuable gif, saw this, and had to use it immediately.)

And, I thought the whole point in a blog hop is to "hop" around other blogs and find some new blogs to read and interact with.   Well, I participated in my first blog hop, I linked back to the host, I read ALL the posts on the link-up and commented when I was inspired to do so, I even shared more in the blog hop post that I had to (I think), and I was supposed to link a "content" filled post - I linked this post about equality.  I have not received ONE comment from any of the blog hop participants on this post.  #bloghopfail  (The comments I did receive were from people who already read my blog - thanks girls!)

If you participate in a link-up, mention and link back to the host:  I don't think I even need to explain myself on this one, I just think it's the right thing to do.

Blogger shaming:  I don't follow very many blogger rules.  I'm okay with that because my goals with having a blog are not necessarily the same as others.  They don't have to be.  So, don't shame me if I don't follow all your blogger rules.  (It's happened.  Once.  I got an email "encouraging" me to change some things about how I blog in order to follow that person's blogger rules.)  I admit that I don't have many followers, I don't have much structure or focus, so I don't have to follow the rules.  Damnit.

I blog to maintain another line of communication with friends, family, and loved ones who live far away from me.  I blog to share some of my personal interests with others who have the same interests.  I blog to let myself have an outlet to write, or converse, or let go of a stream of consciousness rolling around in my brain.  Also, I enjoy the almost entirely positive and supportive blogger community.  I have immensely enjoyed the interaction that I've shared with some other bloggers.

You're not going to connect, be inspired, laugh, or be motivated by every post or every blogger.  No way.  But, you may just find something inspiring, or funny, or motivating, or a new blogger connection, that is a positive addition to your life.   That can be a wonderful thing.  I'm all about wonderful things.  And kindness.

Rant over.

Now...tell me...do you agree?  Disagree?  Do you have any blogging pet peeves?

Blog Hop - Let's Be Friends

I saw this on Lindsay's blog today, and I loved that it is a way to find/meet new bloggers and read some posts that those bloggers are sharing based on good content.

Now...sometimes, I'm dumb.  Sometimes, I'm technically-challenged.  Sometimes, I'm vocal of not necessarily abiding by blogger rules (so, I don't pay attention to them).  But...I'm gonna try with this.  I'm gonna see if I can jump into this blog hop.  I'm not even sure I'm supposed to share all of this...but Lindsay did, and I'm following her lead.  Although, Lindsay is a co-host.  Maybe she's supposed to share, but I'm not?  Hell.  I don't know.  I'm trying here, alright?!  If I didn't need to post all this...I'm alright with promoting positive bloggers, and that's exactly what these ladies seem to be.

A blog hop is a set time frame for current or aspiring bloggers to find new blogs and quality content. It is a great way to make new friends and find inspiration! It is also a fabulous way to promote your own blog and posts.

Dear Friends,

What a day to celebrate! This is the 125th week of the Let’s Be Friends blog hop! Thanks for joining us on this special day. Chelsee and Tiffany are extremely delighted to see the way this hop has grown and love to see your faces each week!

Join us every Tuesday at 7am (MST). This blog hop focuses on content. LINK UP YOUR FAVORITE POST from last week in this fun content-sharing blog hop! I love the idea of blog hopping, but I love the idea of reading posts and quality content on new blogs I’ve never been to even more. Instead of simply linking up your blog button, you are now able to link up your favorite post you recently wrote. Have a delicious recipe to share, DIY tutorial, or heartfelt post? Share it with us! All hosts and co-hosts put up some unique and fun content from the past week. Make sure to check them out. P.S.- you may still link up your blog button and blog name, but it is encouraged to link up your favorite post instead. You will get more page views and interest if you do so! Some of the most successful blog hops I have participate in focus on content rather than just exchanging follows. You never know who will become a loyal follower or pin that delicious new recipe you posted!

The BEST part of this blog hop? Each week there will be a WINNER! That’s right, each week we will choose one lucky blog to feature from the previous week’s hop. This hop receives thousands of page views every week, so your blog will have the chance to be center stage for free. You must follow all the hosts and co-hosts in order to win. Only those who link up a specific post are eligible to be featured! *You must follow all the hosts and co-hosts in order to win.

The last exciting change is that the co-host spots will now be available to all sponsors of The Dwelling Tree or Southern Beauty Guide. If you are interested in co-hosting the blog hop, email Tiffany or Chelsee about sponsorship opportunities and how to co-host the weekly hop!

The Lady Lawyer
Hello everyone! This is Chelsee. This week I chose this post because it is a cause that is near and dear to my hear! I have always been an animal lover and consider my pets my children/furbabies. I find so many go straight to dog breeders to get their pets when there are so many loving animals that are available for adoption. When I saw Brittany‘s post about why she chose to adopt I couldn’t help but relate to it. I have adopted more dogs than I can count, and each have become a part of my family. After reading adoption story about getting her “bundle of spunk” and reading her argument for adoption, I knew I had to share this with all of you. She is not the only one that has to change the channel every time an ASPCA commercial comes on TV, I too find I just can’t look at helpless animals. I hope after reading this post you are implored to adopt your own furbaby.
I love Brittany and her blog The Lady Lawyer. She has the cutest blog design and is a fantastic blogger. Don’t forget to head over and read this post and much more from Brittany!
Keep posting awesome content! You make it so fun for us to read all your posts! If you can, please link up a specific post. It makes it easier for us to come and visit!
Time to Link up!

4th of July in Australia

I've been a member of a facebook group called the "Sydney Americans".  I've seen parties they've hosted for the Super Bowl, Halloween, and Cinco de Mayo, but I've never taken myself out to join the fun and festivities.  When I read the following post about a 4th of July bash, I knew I need to go.  When I read it aloud to my guy, he said "you can wear your onesie" in a somewhat sarcastic manner thinking "she's not going to wear her onesie, is she?!"...I responded "Hell yeah, I can wear my onesie!"  No doubt.  Pajamas on a Saturday night.  Yep, I'm in.

"Once again we're throwing the biggest Fourth of July American Independence Day Party in the Southern Hemisphere!

OzForex, Jim Beam, Blue Moon, Outback Steakhouse, Coors, ESPN, Chugg Entertainment, Hungry Jacks, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, Bonza Bike Tours, Jazz City BBQ, Tailgate Beer, Jelly Belly, Samuel Adams, United Way, Cohibar, Hard Rock Cafe Sydney, Sydney Expat Americans, Network Canada"

I have a girlfriend that lives here who went to junior high and high school with me. I contacted her and told her we needed to go to this shindig.  She agreed.  As it got closer, the party kept growing.  On Thursday, there were 1200+ RSVPs on the facebook event page, by Saturday morning, there were 1600+.  I have no idea how many were in attendance, but a lot.  A lot were in attendance.

Highlights: Jim Beam Maple Magic Slushees (think, pancakes as an icee); American beer including Louisiana made Abita brews; fireworks (well, I was in the toilet for these...when I came out, it was impossible to get out to the balcony...oh, the woes of wearing a onesie); American-themed trivia; American food (pulled pork sandwiches, potato skins, hot wings, and more); the costumes (from Evel Knieval to American Psycho, Lady Liberty to Pilgrims...we Americans know how to dress for a costume party!); party music and dancing all night; the venue overlooking Darling Harbour; red solo cups.

I gotta admit, I'm pretty dern proud and impressed with the amount of fun, positivity, jubilation, and all-around happy rowdiness that was shown.  I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.  (All pictures pulled from the Sydney Americans photo album or they are my own.)

HUGE shout-out to the organizers of this event - it was awesome!  I will definitely be joining more parties thrown by this group.

Who wants to come visit me in Australia next year and celebrate the 4th of July Aussie/American style?!

Sunday's Seven Snapshots vol.28

My dad & stepmom give me Amazon gift cards for my birthday & Christmas. Book deliveries often follow.

She is such a daddy's girl.

In this building, there is a library. It's not the closest or most convenient, but I have to visit from time to time because it's the prettiest.

A fabulous, fresh, sunny Winter day.

He is seriously so sweet to our fur babies. This kid loves them so much.

When did they put up a ferris wheel at Darling Harbour?  You know I want to get on it.

Ready for 4th of July celebrations... More detailed post to follow.

Happy holiday weekend, and Happy birthday to America!
