Olympics as an expat

After this twitter exchange with Alyssa, I was reminded about a post I intended to write (but didn't).  Seriously, how often does this happen??  Anyway...that post was/is about watching the Olympic Games as an expat.
https://twitter.com/alyssagoesbang/status/707013988450705408

If I was an organized blogger, I'd schedule it around the time the Olympics start showing, but I'm not.  So, here it is:

I pride myself on not being an American that feels like "We are Americans.  We are the best.  No other country matters but us."  But, when it comes to the Olympic Games, I find myself being uber-American.  I want America to win all the medals.  I want the telecasts to show all the American events (especially when medals are involved).  But, if you live in another country, that doesn't happen.  Australians want to watch Australians.  Can you believe that?!

Here's a few of the things that I discovered watching the Olympics while living in another country:

  • You know those little mini stories and bios that usually pull at your heartstrings that feature a personal story about athletes?  If you're in Australia, they're about Australian athletes.  Duh.
This gif depicts the first ever gold medal won by an Australian, and it is a regular feature story.

  • You know those extremely entertaining sports that are the top priority for my viewing: gymnastics (Summer Olympics) and figure skating (Winter Olympics)?  Well, they aren't all that frequently shown here.  And when they are, they show the Australian competitors...who usually aren't medal contenders, so they don't often show the full coverage of gymnastics and figure skating.  I know.  It's a travesty.

  • I have more to say about this topic.  My most favorite Olympics viewing moments are watching gymnastics and figure skating.  I love the combination of artistry and athleticism.  I love watching the athlete perform a routine, then anxiously await the judges' score.  I like that this fills entire nights of excitement, thrills, and even spills.  I like that the commentators are often former medal winners and Olympians.  I don't get this here.  This is what I miss the most for my Olympic entertainment.

  • The television coverage here highlights the Australian medal contenders and winners (understandably so).  Sometimes, Americans are in the events (particularly snowboarding in Winter and swimming in Summer).  I've lived here long enough to be happy for Australian winners, but I'll admit it, if they are competing against an American, I want the American to win gold, and the Australian to win silver.

  • Medal ceremonies...those times that an athlete has won a gold medal and he/she is standing on the podium with his/her hand over the heart and singing "The Star Spangled Banner"...and the viewer gets goosebumps as the camera zooms in on the parents in tears and the crowd waving American flags...nope, you don't see that here.

  • Yes, when something monumental takes place, like beating a World Record or Michael Phelps being awarded the medal that makes him the recipients of the most medals of any Summer Olympian, it's just good journalism for that to be televised.  And, it is.  But, you don't get all the stories and interviews and feel-good American hoopla surrounding it (when you don't live in America).

  • BIG events, like the "world's fastest man" or the 4x100m swimming relay are televised live.  But, living in a land with a timezone that rarely comes close to any timezone that the event is taking place, often the result gets "spoiled" by the time I watch it.  Unless I avoid all social media, news commentary, and turn off all alerts on my phone, I get spoilers.

Do you watch the Olympics?  What's your favorite part of the Games to watch?

Aussie Author Challenge: Book 4

The fourth book I've read for the Aussie Author Challenge is the debut by young author, Favel Parrett, "Past the Shallows".   I really, really wanted to fall in love with this book, but it was just okay for me.  I could see the author trying to connect, trying to emote, trying to pull me into the story...but I didn't connect, I didn't feel, and quite frankly, I predicted what was going to happen.  I couldn't decide if the reader is supposed to know what unfolds, but just enjoy the ride to get there...or if the end was supposed to have some surprising revelations. Some people seem to really love this book, I wanted to, but it just didn't happen.  2/5

I saw this floating around facebook and thought it could be used for an outline for a future blog post.  Then Christina did it, and I enjoyed reading her answers.  I was getting my post ready and pulling pictures which involved me pulling a picture of Jesse James and me.  That same day, he passed away.  Post was postponed.

Confessions and Hashtags: the 3rd week of the 3rd month

I confess:  I've missed this link-up the last couple of weeks.  I feel no guilt.  Y'all are going to keep confessing and hashtagging without me, and I'm A-Okay with that.  #badblogger

Kimmi posted this Meditation App Review nearly a month ago.  I downloaded a couple of the apps fully intending to incorporate meditating in my life.  I confess:  Haven't done it.  Haven't even opened the apps.  #tomorrowisanotherday

My friend, Jenn, asked for guest posts for her blog.  I confess: I was lazy.  I pulled an old blog post of mine.  I posted it over two years ago when I didn't have many readers, but it is still a topic that rings true for me.  Go take a look at my guest post about friends who become strangers. #fromthearchives

I confess:  I'm feeling homesick.  I am much better when I have an actual trip to Texas planned and booked.  Have I already mentioned this?  Oh well.  It's still true.  #expatproblems

Since the dog I left behind in Texas, Jesse James, passed away a couple of weeks ago, I confess that I've been making efforts to spend more time with these gorgeous girls of mine.  #furkidsgiveunconditionallove

I confess:  I don't know what's the difference between sparkling water and soda water.  #isthereadifference

I confess:  I got online and reserved 8 books at the library.  Some are for book challenges; some aren't.  Some are based on recommendations from other bloggers.  I have books at home needing to be read, but the library beckons.  #jugglingbooksishard #gimmeallthebooks

I am trying to write a "50 Before 50" post.  But.  Fuck.  50?!?!  Really?!?!  I confess:  I'm having a difficult time looking at the slippery slope of falling down the 50 hole.  #ishouldbe32 #not42

Around the World in 80 Books

If you are a book lover and/or reader of this blog, you must know the "Show Us Your Books" link-up.  (If not, ask me, because it's the best link-up everrrrr!)

On last week's link-up, I stumbled upon a blogger who is participating in a book challenge called "Around the World in 80 Books".

I do love myself a book challenge.  And, I love to travel.  And, if I read a book set in another country, it's kinda, sorta like I'm traveling and exploring another culture without the travel costs.  Win.  I like goodreads.  I like lists.  And, I like finding new books.  This is totally a challenge for me.

I'm playing around with a goal/bucket list of "50 Before 50" (except, I'm hating the thought that I'm rolling towards 50).  This is going to be one of those goals...to "travel" around the world in 80 books before the 17th of June 2023.  I've got plenty of time to do this.

So, I joined this group on goodreads.  I looked at my "to read" list; based on that list, I had a pretty good list going.  I'd already selected many books set in various countries.  Go me!  I already own 7 of the books I've selected that I've picked up at secondhand bookstores along the way.  Finally, I'll get around to reading them.

Sunday's Seven Snapshots vol.64

I'm biased.  Yes.  But, is he not one of the most photogenic cats ever?!?  Yes, he is.  I love my Astro, and he's been extra attentive the last couple of weeks.  By my side, all.the.time.  This picture, I took while getting out of the bathtub.

Sunrises were picture perfect all week.

The colors of the morning made it look like Dolly was eating her breakfast under purple lights.  *Cue Prince music*

Hair - lips - glasses - got to coordinate!

My hair dresser moved to a new location.  Walking there Friday morning, I passed this place.  It looks so old-school and authentic...not hipster-new trying to be old-school (I looked it the windows, and I was right.)  I definitely need to go back here for some drinks.

Street art in Neutral Bay

I'm straying this week from my personal "Sunday's Seven Snapshots" all needing to be pictures I took using my phone..........to bring you this..............

Von Miller & Witney Carson - "Dancing with the Stars" - I don't even watch the show, we don't get it in Australia (Australia has its own version), but I'm still trying to figure out how to watch/vote.  Because, I love Von Miller, and Witney is adorable (I know her from her "So You Think You Can Dance" days.)

Happy Weekending my peoples!
